A much-branched, variable, erect, rough-hairy annual herb, up to 90 cm tall with slender, reddish stems covered with short, stiff hairs, rooting at the lower nodes. Flowers are white and throughout the year. Leaves are opposite, simple, rough, dull green, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 2-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, basally swollen hairs on both surfaces, veins prominent. Inflorescence(whole flower head) is up to 1 cm in diameter. Seed are light-brown to black, laterally-flattened achene, wedge-shaped, 2-3 mm long, 0.9 mm wide. Stems are pale green, rarely purple, with fine, small hairs. Leaves are up to 6 mm long, 3 mm wide, and opposite. Later leaves look like the first true leaves and have fine, translucent marginal hairs. The taste of Eclipta prostrata is pungent and bitter.
